Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma stated that the upcoming film Dhurandhar 2 has the potential to challenge the benchmark set by South Indian pan-India cinema. Sharing his views on social media platform X, Varma said South Indian films have redefined pan-India storytelling in recent years through realistic narratives, strong characterizations, and high production standards. However, he believes director Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2 could reset those standards entirely and significantly influence contemporary filmmaking. According to Varma, audiences are increasingly demanding globally competitive content, and films relying solely on scale, visual effects, and mass appeal may struggle to succeed in the future.
Varma further remarked that filmmakers and producers must reassess their approach, warning that outdated commercial formulas could lead to empty theatres. He suggested that strong storytelling and well-written characters will become more important than exaggerated heroism. Calling the film a “meteor impact” on the industry, Varma predicted that Dhurandhar 2, slated for release on March 19, could mark the end of conventional masala storytelling and redefine cinematic expectations. He urged directors to evolve with changing audience preferences, emphasizing that the goalposts of filmmaking have already shifted.
