Several Waymo self-driving cars were reportedly vandalised and set on fire during protests in Los Angeles. Protesters allegedly smashed windscreens, sprayed graffiti on the vehicles and then torched them, causing significant damage. The affected vehicles are reportedly worth around $600,000 in total.
Following the incidents, Waymo, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, suspended its services in the area as a safety precaution. Los Angeles police are analysing CCTV footage and other available evidence to identify the people involved in the attacks. The incidents have raised fresh concerns about the safety of autonomous vehicle services operating in areas affected by unrest.
