Over 30 people were killed and around 200 injured in violent clashes between security forces and protesters in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). The unrest broke out after the government banned the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which had been leading protests over economic and political issues. Tensions escalated following the death of a local businessman in firing during earlier clashes in Rawalakot.
Security forces said several protesters were killed during exchanges of fire after they attempted to attack personnel using automatic weapons, petrol bombs, and other weapons. Authorities claimed control was restored, while JAAC supporters alleged the death toll was much higher than official figures. The protests were also linked to opposition against reserved assembly seats for refugees in upcoming elections.
