US Remarks on India’s Rise Resurface

Remarks made by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at the Raisina Dialogue in March have resurfaced amid renewed US pressure on India over trade and Russian energy imports. Landau had said Washington would not repeat what he described as the mistakes it made with China two decades ago, stressing that future economic engagement with India should protect American interests and remain fair to both sides. His comments had sparked discussion about Washington’s approach to India’s growing economic and commercial influence.

The remarks are now receiving renewed attention after the United States enacted legislation giving the president authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. India, a major buyer of Russian crude, could be affected, although the tariffs are not automatically imposed and would depend on further US action. India is studying the details and potential impact of the legislation, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.
