An unexpected incident occurred at Chennai Port on Tuesday morning when sulphur stored in the port yard reacted due to high temperatures, releasing heavy smoke. The chemical, imported for fertilizer production, began emitting thick fumes around 11 a.m., creating panic in the surrounding area.
The dense smoke spread across a radius of 4 to 5 kilometers, causing difficulties for residents and commuters. Several people reportedly experienced breathing issues and fainted. Authorities immediately responded by closing nearby roads temporarily. Officials stated that the situation is now under control and have launched an investigation, suspecting that high temperatures triggered the reaction.
