A new book titled Regime Change by journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan has revealed key developments surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine–Russia war during his second term. According to the book, shortly after taking office, Trump held a crucial meeting at the Oval Office where a draft peace plan was presented by retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg. The proposal suggested deploying foreign troops to monitor a ceasefire in the conflict zone, with European nations like France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands expected to contribute forces.
However, U.S. Vice President JD Vance reportedly opposed sending NATO troops, warning it could provoke Russia and escalate tensions, potentially drawing the United States directly into the war. As an alternative, he suggested deploying troops from non-European countries such as India and Saudi Arabia. The book states that Trump firmly rejected this idea, noting that despite his strong relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India would not agree to such involvement. Trump also reportedly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling him ineffective and accusing him of mishandling the crisis despite receiving U.S. support.
