The Supreme Court has ruled that a romantic relationship between two consenting adults cannot be termed cheating merely because it did not culminate in marriage. The court set aside the Telangana Police Recruitment Board’s decision to deny employment to Gajula Tirupati, a constable candidate, over allegations of a failed relationship.
The bench observed that pre-marital relationships have become common and cannot be used as grounds for moral disqualification without evidence of coercion or fraud. It held that denying employment without proven misconduct is arbitrary and upheld the earlier High Court ruling in favour of the candidate.
