The Supreme Court of India has made strong observations against fraudsters involved in so-called digital arrest scams, describing such cybercrimes as a form of “digital extortion.” The court called for strict action against those responsible for these offences and urged authorities to take firm measures to curb cybercrime. It also dismissed a petition filed by accused individuals seeking to consolidate all the FIRs registered against them across the country in connection with digital fraud cases, stating that victims should not be inconvenienced for the convenience of the accused.
The bench observed that these scams are often carried out through video calls, with fraudsters allegedly impersonating law-enforcement or government officials to intimidate victims and extort money. It stressed the need for stringent punishment and reportedly remarked that any lawful provision permitting action even before the completion of a trial should be considered. However, any punishment must remain within the framework of due process and applicable law.
