The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Madhya Pradesh. The by-election became necessary following the resignation of Union Minister L. Murugan from his Rajya Sabha membership. The election is scheduled to take place on November 12, while November 2 is the last date for filing nominations and November 5 is the deadline for withdrawing nominations. The entire election process is expected to be completed by November 16. The BJP currently has eight Rajya Sabha members from Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress has two. With the BJP in power in the state, political observers believe Puri has a strong chance of winning the seat.
Hardeep Singh Puri is currently serving as the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. A 1974-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, he joined the BJP in 2014. In November 2020, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh as a BJP member. L. Murugan, who served as a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and the Rajya Sabha on October 14. His Rajya Sabha term was originally scheduled to end on April 2, 2030. At the time, Murugan said his decision to step down was aimed at strengthening the BJP at the grassroots level in Tamil Nadu. His resignation led to the by-election in Madhya Pradesh, with the BJP now fielding Puri for the vacant seat.
