Venezuela was struck by two consecutive earthquakes, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the capital city. Several multi-storey buildings collapsed, raising fears that many people may be trapped under the debris. Scientists have warned of potential aftershocks that could worsen the situation. According to the United States Geological Survey, the disaster could be catastrophic, with possible casualties ranging from 10,000 to 100,000.
The government has not yet confirmed the official death toll, but reports suggest the number of injured is rising rapidly. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to evacuate their homes as a precaution. Emergency measures, including cutting off fuel supplies to buildings, have been implemented. Following nearly 20 aftershocks, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency, while airports, schools, and transport services have been shut down.
