Indore, already recognized as India’s cleanest city, has achieved another milestone by becoming the country’s first beggar-free city. The city administration successfully implemented a rehabilitation-driven initiative aimed at eliminating begging and providing livelihood opportunities to ensure a dignified life for vulnerable individuals.
Under the program launched two years ago, begging at roads and intersections was banned. A special team from the Women and Child Development Department identifies beggars and shifts them to rehabilitation centres. They are then supported through family tracing, medical care, skill development, and employment opportunities. Children of such individuals are enrolled in government schools after proper documentation, including Aadhaar registration, ensuring long-term social reintegration.
