A historic rescue operation in the waters near the Strait of Hormuz has brought global attention to an autonomous drone boat developed by a Texas-based defense technology company co-founded by Indian-American engineer Vaibhav Altaker. The unmanned vessel played a crucial role in rescuing two US pilots who were stranded after their AH-64 Apache helicopter reportedly crashed near the Oman coast during a patrol mission. The successful operation marked one of the first instances of a drone boat being used in such a rescue mission, highlighting the growing importance of autonomous maritime technology in modern defense operations.
The drone boat, known as Corsair, was developed by Saronic Technologies, a company established in Austin, Texas, in 2022. Vaibhav Altaker, the company’s Chief Technology Officer and a graduate in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, is one of its co-founders. Designed as a 24-foot autonomous diesel-powered vessel, Corsair is used for surveillance, mine detection, maritime monitoring, and support missions. The successful rescue has showcased the potential of unmanned systems in enhancing safety, reducing operational risks, and supporting military missions in strategically important regions.
