Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his son over their alleged remarks on cultural and political issues. Sarma claimed that Kharge had previously criticised both Bharat Ratna awardee Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and the central government over the decision to honour the legendary Assamese singer with the country’s highest civilian award. Hazarika remains a celebrated cultural icon whose contributions to Assamese music and Indian cinema are widely recognised. Sarma’s comments have brought renewed attention to the political debate surrounding Hazarika’s recognition and the Congress leadership’s alleged response to it.
Sarma also targeted Kharge’s son, accusing him of frequently making controversial remarks. He further alleged that the father-son duo showed a stronger inclination towards Pakistani culture. These statements have added to the ongoing political exchanges between the BJP and Congress leaders, bringing cultural identity and political criticism into focus. However, the allegations about Kharge’s earlier comments and his family’s cultural preferences reflect Sarma’s claims and should be understood in that context.
