Friday is traditionally considered an auspicious day for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi in Hindu customs. Devotees believe that offering prayers to Goddess Lakshmi with devotion can bring prosperity, happiness and well being. Maintaining cleanliness at home, cleaning the house before sunrise, decorating the entrance with rangoli and lighting a ghee lamp before the deity are considered auspicious practices. Wearing clean, particularly white, clothes on Friday is also mentioned as a traditional practice.
Traditional beliefs also advise keeping essentials such as turmeric and salt stocked before they completely run out. Rice and grains are regarded as symbols of Goddess Lakshmi in many traditions, and keeping the rice measuring vessel upside down is therefore considered inauspicious. Some customs recommend having a sattvic diet on Friday, including milk, while avoiding onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food. Keeping a small portion of cooked rice in the kitchen at night is also followed in some households as a traditional practice associated with seeking the blessings of ancestors and deities.
Offering lotus flowers to Goddess Lakshmi, donating fresh flowers, food or clothes, and wearing a kumkum mark on the forehead are also considered auspicious according to traditional beliefs. Some astrologers suggest observing silence during Varjyam on Friday as a spiritual practice associated with prosperity.
