The Democratic Party is making notable gains in the US midterm elections, with its candidates performing strongly in several key contests traditionally considered Republican strongholds. Democrat Roy Cooper is leading in the North Carolina Senate race against Republican Michael Whatley, while incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff has secured re-election in Georgia. Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has also won the Georgia governor’s race, becoming the state’s first Black woman governor, according to the report. Democrats have additionally made gains in Florida, where they are challenging the Republican Party’s two-thirds supermajority in the state House of Representatives.
Indian-origin candidates have also attracted attention in these elections. Pia Dandiya, the Democratic candidate in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, has won with 52.2 per cent of the votes after 94 per cent of ballots were counted, according to the reported figures. In Kentucky, Democrat Jack Dembow secured an unexpected victory in a constituency where Donald Trump had recorded a significant lead in 2024. Meanwhile, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is trailing Democratic candidate Amy Acton in the early counting of the Ohio governor’s race. Indian-origin candidate Saritha Kommareddy is facing a closely contested race against incumbent Letitia James for New York Attorney General. The final outcome of that contest remains uncertain as counting continues.
