A major tragedy occurred in the Central African Republic after a gold mine collapsed in the Nana-Mambere Abba area in the western part of the country. At least 30 people were killed in the incident, while several workers remain trapped underground. Local residents and fellow workers spent hours searching the collapsed site and recovered 30 bodies. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. A worker who survived the accident said hopes of rescuing those still trapped alive were fading.
The Central African Republic government expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured support to the families of the victims. Authorities said rescue operations had been intensified to locate and bring out those still trapped inside the mine. Thousands of workers are employed in small-scale gold mines across the country. Workers say such accidents occur frequently because many mining sites lack adequate safety standards and protective measures.
