Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt has sparked controversy with his remarks on the US visa system, alleging that Indian professionals are taking away jobs meant for Americans through H1B and other visa programs. He claimed that a global “visa cartel” is operating and controversially referred to Hyderabad’s Chilkur Balaji Temple as a “visa temple,” suggesting that people visit it seeking blessings for US work visas. In a series of tweets, Schmitt criticized employment-based visa categories such as H1B, L1, F1, and OPT, arguing that they are putting pressure on American wages and displacing local workers.
In another tweet, Schmitt targeted Indian students, claiming they form a significant portion of foreign students in the US and benefit from subsidized work permits funded by taxpayers. He alleged that many transition from student visas to H1B and eventually secure green cards, creating tough competition for American graduates. Schmitt also accused what he termed a “visa cartel” of sharing interview questions and facilitating hiring advantages, further claiming that major tech companies prefer foreign workers over Americans. His remarks have triggered widespread debate on immigration, employment policies, and global talent mobility.
