The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the opening of bank branches and offices on Sunday, September 27, 2026, to ensure customers have access to essential banking services before the proposed nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30. Public sector banks and regional rural banks will function normally, while branches, ATM-linked offices and currency chests have also been permitted to operate.
The move comes as bank unions have announced a three-day strike over their demand for a five-day banking week. The government and bank managements have appealed to unions to defer the strike. The proposed action, following the September 26-27 weekend holidays, could affect branch-based services for several consecutive days, making Sunday operations particularly significant for customers.
