Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been appointed by Tata Trusts to represent it in the escalating dispute with Tata Sons over corporate governance, N Chandrasekaran’s reappointment and the proposed listing of the holding company. Singhvi has argued that the rights of shareholder-owners cannot be nullified and said the long-standing relationship between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons should not be disrupted.
The legal escalation comes after the Tata Sons board approved a fresh five-year term for N. Chandrasekaran and backed steps related to a potential listing. Tata Trusts, which holds about 66% of Tata Sons, has challenged the validity of the reappointment and opposed the proposed listing. Singhvi has also referred to the Supreme Court’s Tata-Mistry judgment while presenting the Trusts’ position. The dispute may now move further into the legal arena as both sides consider their options.
