The volume of goods imported by India from Russia has declined significantly. In January this year, imports reportedly fell by nearly 40 percent, with a substantial reduction observed in the purchase of Russian crude oil. The decline is believed to be the result of Indian refineries scaling back their procurement of Russian crude.
In January last year, India imported goods worth approximately $4.81 billion from Russia. However, during the same period this year, the figure dropped to $2.86 billion. Since 2022, Russia had been offering crude oil at discounted prices, leading to a sharp increase in India’s imports. Recently, however, purchases appear to have slowed due to mounting sanctions pressure from Western nations and the ongoing trade discussions between India and the United States.
Amid the recently concluded interim trade agreement between India and the United States, the issue of Russian crude oil imports reportedly featured prominently in discussions. The United States stated that India had provided assurances regarding oil imports from Moscow. In response, India clarified that it would continue to make decisions based on its national interests and domestic priorities.
