The United States is preparing to impose stricter sanctions aimed at curbing Russia’s revenue from energy exports. A proposed Russia sanctions bill has gained momentum in the Senate, where lawmakers have agreed to review it. If enacted, the legislation could have significant implications for countries like India that continue to import Russian oil. The move is part of broader efforts to limit Russia’s financial inflows from global energy markets.
The bill has cleared an initial procedural stage in the Senate with an 86–12 vote and will also require approval from the House of Representatives before becoming law. If passed, it could allow the US President, Donald Trump, to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil and gas. This development could place nations such as India and China under increased economic pressure, potentially affecting trade dynamics and import costs.
