IndiGo’s plan to operate non-stop international long-haul services is now becoming a reality. The airline has inducted its first Airbus A321 XLR aircraft into its fleet a next-generation aircraft capable of flying up to 8,700 kilometres non-stop for nearly 11 hours on a single refuelling. IndiGo has become the first Indian airline to receive this model. The aircraft is configured with 12 business-class and 183 economy-class seats. IndiGo has placed an order for 40 such aircraft, with nine expected to be delivered by December this year.
From the 23rd of this month, IndiGo will commence non-stop services between Mumbai and Athens, the capital of Greece, using this aircraft. With this, the airline is set to begin long-range narrow-body operations. The upcoming A321 XLR aircraft will also be deployed on international routes such as Istanbul (Türkiye), Denpasar (Bali), and other destinations. IndiGo plans to use these aircraft to expand its network across Europe and East Asian cities.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers stated that the A321 XLR offers high fuel efficiency and lower operating costs, making it ideal for long-haul operations. IndiGo currently operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft. According to the Airbus website, the A321 XLR is presently in service only on routes such as Paris, Kuala Lumpur and Dallas.
