Foreign Firm Eyes Hyderabad Hospital Giant

Hyderabad based Medicover Hospitals India (MHI) has been acquired by American private equity firm KKR in a deal valued at approximately €1.2 billion (around ₹13,200 crore). The transaction is considered the largest acquisition in India's healthcare sector to date. KKR will acquire the 66.1% stake held by Sweden based Medicover AB along with the remaining shares owned by minority investors.

Medicover AB said it will use the proceeds from the sale to expand its hospital operations in Poland, Romania, and Germany. Industry experts believe KKR's investment reflects its confidence in the long term growth potential of India's healthcare sector, driven by rising demand for advanced medical services and increasing health insurance coverage.

Established in 2017, Medicover Hospitals India currently operates 24 hospitals with nearly 4,800 beds across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Around 1,900 doctors provide treatment across more than 80 medical specialties. The acquisition is expected to be completed by December this year, subject to regulatory approvals, while Medicover's expansion plans in India will continue without interruption.
