In 2018, Indian hockey was facing one of its most challenging phases after the withdrawal of its primary sponsor, leaving both the men's and women's national teams struggling with financial uncertainty. At a crucial moment, former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik stepped forward and made history by becoming the first state government leader to directly sponsor a national sports team. Under a five-year agreement worth ₹140 crore, Odisha provided comprehensive support covering athlete welfare, training infrastructure, nutrition, coaching, equipment, and international exposure tours.
The investment played a significant role in reviving Indian hockey and strengthening its global competitiveness. The results were visible on the Olympic stage, where the Indian men's team ended a 41-year medal drought by winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, while the women's team achieved a historic fourth-place finish. The men's team followed it up with another bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024. Patnaik's vision also led to the construction of the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, the world's largest hockey stadium, along with nearly 20 AstroTurf training centres across Odisha. Before leaving office, he extended the state's commitment to Indian hockey, laying a strong foundation for continued support through 2036.
