The decision by NCERT to include the 1975 Emergency period in the Class 9 Social Science textbook has been welcomed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party described it as a “dark chapter” in India’s Constitution, stating that fundamental rights were severely restricted during that time and students must learn about it.
The revised textbook highlights the challenges faced during the national Emergency. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Congress party, calling June 25, 1975, a “dark day” when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency. He alleged that constitutional institutions and media were suppressed, and even songs were removed from All India Radio. He added that teaching this history helps prevent its repetition.
