In a bid to curb road accidents caused by drunk driving, Vijayawada City Traffic Police are set to introduce a new enforcement measure targeting offenders caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Until now, police primarily registered cases, conducted counselling sessions, and imposed fines, while informing employers only in cases involving serious misconduct or jail sentences. However, authorities observed that many offenders remained indifferent toward penalties, prompting the department to adopt stricter measures.
As part of the “Arrive Alive” road safety initiative, daily inspections and awareness programs are being conducted across multiple locations under Ibrahimpatnam and G. Konduru police station limits along the Vijayawada–Hyderabad National Highway. Officials identified overspeeding and drunk driving as major causes of accidents. Under the new system, beginning March 1, details of government and private employees caught in drunk-and-drive checks will be shared with their respective organizations. Police believe this step will create accountability and deter individuals from driving under the influence due to fear of professional consequences.
