The Supreme Court has clarified that citizens may submit Class 10 admit cards and pass certificates as supporting documents to establish their eligibility as registered voters. The direction was issued on Wednesday by a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi in connection with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. The Court stated that such academic documents can be considered supplementary proof during voter verification to address discrepancies in registration applications.
Earlier, the bench had advised the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to deploy district and subordinate judges to help resolve nearly 8 million claims related to inconsistencies, including objections concerning parental details in voter applications. With the available judicial officers in West Bengal deemed insufficient, the Court also directed authorities to seek assistance from judicial officers in Jharkhand and Bihar. The clarification comes as the revision exercise is scheduled to conclude on the 28th of this month, with applicants required to submit supporting documents to election officials by 5 p.m. on Thursday.
