Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, IPS, has announced a strict crackdown on food adulteration in the city. He warned that playing with public health will not be tolerated and made it clear that food adulteration would be treated as an attempt to murder. To completely eradicate the menace, special teams comprising police and food safety officials will be deployed across the city.
A preparatory meeting was held at TGICC in Banjara Hills under the chairmanship of the Commissioner, with senior officials from the Food Safety Department. Sajjanar stated that action would not be limited to roadside vendors alone, but would also target manufacturing units that are the root cause of adulteration. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be formulated and strictly implemented to ensure legally sound inspections, sample collection, seizures, and arrests.
The Commissioner warned that traders repeatedly involved in adulteration cases would face permanent cancellation of their business licenses. He also stated that the PD Act would be invoked against adulteration mafias posing a serious threat to public health. To encourage public participation, a dedicated WhatsApp or toll-free number will be launched soon for reporting suspected adulteration, with assurances that informants’ identities will be kept strictly confidential.
