The Supreme Court of India has clarified that a wife choosing to pursue her career, even if it goes against her husband’s expectations, cannot be considered cruelty in a marriage. The observation came during hearings of matrimonial disputes, where the bench emphasised that professional choices and personal independence are integral to individual dignity. The court noted that a working woman’s decision to continue her profession cannot automatically be treated as mental cruelty under matrimonial laws.
The ruling has sparked widespread debate on social media regarding evolving gender roles, family dynamics, and the challenges faced by working women in India. While many praised the judgment for recognising women’s financial independence and professional identity, others highlighted the continued societal pressures women face in balancing career and family responsibilities. Legal experts have described the observation as a reaffirmation of personal freedom and equal respect within marriage.
