The Supreme Court of India has delivered a setback to the Telangana Government by dismissing its petition challenging the Telangana High Court’s order in the case involving a BRS social media activist. The state government had approached the apex court against the High Court’s decision to quash multiple FIRs filed against the activist over social media posts critical of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
Earlier, the Telangana High Court had not only quashed the FIRs but also issued clear guidelines to the police, directing them not to register cases mechanically over social media posts. The state government argued that these guidelines were problematic. However, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s ruling, stating that there was nothing wrong in issuing such directions and went on to appreciate the judgment, reinforcing safeguards against the misuse of criminal law.
