President of India Droupadi Murmu visited Karnataka on Sunday and toured the Indian Navy’s Karwar naval base in Uttara Kannada district. At the naval harbour, she sailed aboard the indigenously built submarine INS Vaghsheer, becoming only the second Indian President after Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to travel in a submarine. She was accompanied by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi during the visit.
At the Karwar naval facility, the President reviewed the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness and was briefed in detail about submarine operations. INS Vaghsheer, the sixth Kalvari-class submarine built under Project-75, is a symbol of India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities. President Murmu observed the submarine’s underwater performance, interacted with naval personnel including women officers, and expressed satisfaction over the increasing role of women in defence services. The visit began with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, reinforcing confidence in the Navy and promoting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
