The Karnataka High Court has strongly criticized Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh for allegedly imitating scenes inspired by Kannada actor Rishab Shetty’s film Kantara and making controversial remarks during a public event in Goa. Hearing a private petition filed against the actor, a bench led by Justice Nagaprasanna observed that no individual has the right to insult or mock the culture and traditions of others. The court emphasized that public figures must exercise greater responsibility while speaking on public platforms. The petition objected to Singh’s imitation and comments referring to deities in an inappropriate manner, prompting judicial scrutiny.
Appearing for the actor, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya argued that the incident occurred due to a lack of awareness and that Ranveer Singh had no intention of hurting sentiments, adding that he had already issued an apology. However, the state counsel contended that Singh should have been aware of local traditions and noted that the imitation reportedly continued despite objections. The court remarked that an apology alone cannot erase the impact of earlier actions and pointed out that videos of the incident remain available on social media. The hearing has been adjourned to March 2, with the court directing police not to take coercive action until then while asking the actor to cooperate with the investigation.
