The state government has given the green signal for the second phase of the lake rejuvenation programme in the city, approving proposals worth ₹303 crore to develop 14 lakes. The proposals submitted by HYDRA Commissioner A. V. Ranganath have received official clearance. Officials said the Phase-I works undertaken by HYDRA are nearing completion, with several lakes freed from encroachments and pollution and restored to their original spread. Encouraged by the results, authorities are gearing up to launch Phase-II works soon, while the government has directed HMDA to arrange the required funds.
Hyderabad’s chain-linked lake system plays a crucial role in flood mitigation, allowing excess rainwater to flow smoothly into the Musi river. Over the years, large-scale encroachments and pollution reduced lake capacities by nearly 80 per cent, increasing flood risks. HYDRA, established two years ago to protect lakes and government lands, has been clearing encroachments, removing silt, fencing lake boundaries, and developing walkways. The lakes are being transformed into eco-friendly recreation hubs with parks, boating facilities, amphitheatres, and landscaped gardens, enhancing both flood control and tourism potential.
