A high-profile Telugu TV news anchor — known for his strong pro-TDP stance and sharp criticism of YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy — has reportedly landed in serious legal trouble.
According to reliable sources, the Hyderabad police have registered a criminal case against the anchor and his associate for allegedly attempting to extort ₹10 crore from a prominent Telugu actor. The development comes following directions from the Telangana High Court.
The case, filed based on the actor’s petition, accuses the duo of not only demanding money but also violating the actor’s privacy by illegally tapping and broadcasting his private phone conversations.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel argued that the anchor and his aide had misused their media influence for blackmail and demanded that strict action be taken. Taking note of the allegations, the High Court instructed the police to initiate proceedings against both individuals.
Acting on the court’s orders, Hyderabad police have booked the accused under Section 308(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — which pertains to attempted extortion — and Section 72 of the Information Technology Act, 2008, for unauthorized disclosure of personal information.
The complaint also alleges that the recorded phone calls were broadcasted on the TV channel to defame the actor and pressure him financially. Police have begun verifying the authenticity of the audio recordings and the circumstances surrounding the alleged extortion attempt.
Further investigation is currently underway.
