

A severe low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclone Ditwa and is rapidly moving towards the coasts. This cyclone has already wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka, claiming over 50 lives and leaving many missing. Now, it's heading straight for India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is expected to make landfall on the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh early on November 30. In this context, emergency warnings have been issued to several states. Recent reports indicate that over the past 6 hours, the cyclone has been moving northwest at a speed of 7 km/h.

The IMD has warned of widespread heavy rains across South India due to the cyclone's impact. Extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastal areas until November 30. From November 29 to December 1, heavy to extremely heavy rains are likely in Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema regions. Particularly on November 30, intense downpours are expected in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Rayalaseema. Kerala may see heavy rains on the 29th, while Karnataka and Telangana could experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains on the 29th and 30th.
In light of the heavy rains and cyclone effects, the IMD has issued Red and Orange alerts for several districts. Red alerts have been declared for Puducherry, Kadalu, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts. Specifically, Red alerts are in effect for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on November 30. In Andhra Pradesh, Orange alerts have been issued for Tirupati, Chittoor, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore districts. Similarly, Orange alerts are active for Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Ranipet districts in Tamil Nadu, along with the Karaikal region.
Amid the crisis in Sri Lanka, the Indian government has come forward with humanitarian assistance, launching 'Operation Sagar Bandhu'. Through this initiative, defense support, relief materials, and medical aid are being provided.
The adverse weather conditions have severely impacted transportation systems in South India. At Chennai International Airport, several flights were canceled on November 29. IndiGo Airlines has warned of potential disruptions to its services. Additionally, Southern Railway has canceled multiple trains on November 28 and 29 due to Cyclone Ditwa. Travelers are advised to monitor updates in advance.
