The Central Government has launched a significant new welfare scheme, PM-RAHAT, to provide immediate medical assistance to road accident victims across the country. Recognizing the critical importance of the 'Golden Hour'—the first hour after an accident when prompt medical care can most effectively save lives—the government aims to ensure that no life is lost due to financial constraints or delays in treatment. Under this new initiative, road accident victims are eligible for immediate medical aid worth up to ₹1.5 Lakhs. This financial support ensures that hospitals can begin life-saving procedures without waiting for any advance payments or credit clearances.
The scheme mandates that hospital authorities must start treatment immediately upon the victim's arrival. Furthermore, if a particular hospital lacks the necessary medical facilities or specialists to treat the victim, the management is strictly required to arrange for the victim's transfer to a better-equipped facility using their own ambulance. To ensure a smooth and transparent process for healthcare providers, the PM-RAHAT scheme utilizes a digital platform. Once the patient is discharged, hospitals are required to upload the treatment bills and relevant medical packages to a dedicated government portal for reimbursement. By prioritizing the Golden Hour and removing financial barriers, this scheme is expected to significantly reduce the mortality rate from road accidents in India.
