The Central Government has undertaken a major renaming exercise to modernize and align the identity of major government institutions with people-centric governance. Governor residences traditionally called Raj Bhavan and Raj Niwas will now be known as Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas, effective immediately.
The Prime Minister’s Office has also been renamed as Seva Teerth. The new PMO complex, built within the Executive Enclave, will operate out of a building titled “Seva Teerth-1”. This structure is one of three new facilities constructed as part of the relocation and modernization plan.
In another major administrative update, the old Central Secretariat has been rechristened Kartavya Bhavan. The renaming coincides with the opening of the first building under the Common Central Secretariat project, which aims to bring several ministries under one coordinated campus.
Officials describe this as a symbolic departure from colonial-era nomenclature such as “Raj”, traditionally associated with royalty. They assert that the new names reflect an ethos of service, responsibility and accessible governance.
