A shocking revelation has emerged in the investigation of the tragic Kurnool bus fire involving Vemuri Kaveri Travels near Chinnatekuru. Forensic officials have confirmed that the explosion of over 400 mobile phones stored in the luggage compartment significantly intensified the blaze, resulting in devastating casualties.
According to the investigation, the accident began when the bus collided with a motorcycle. The impact caused the bike’s fuel tank cap to dislodge, leading to a petrol leak. The motorcycle got trapped under the bus and was dragged for several meters, creating sparks that ignited the leaking fuel. The flames soon spread to the luggage compartment.
Inside the compartment was a parcel containing hundreds of mobile phones. As temperatures rose, the lithium-ion batteries in the phones overheated and exploded simultaneously, causing a powerful blast. The explosion propelled the fire into the passenger section, leaving little to no time for those on board to escape.
Tragically, most victims were seated or resting in the front portion of the bus, directly above the luggage area, and couldn’t escape as the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames and thick smoke within moments. The situation worsened when the emergency exit door failed to open, trapping passengers inside.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver stopped the bus after noticing the fire, escaped through the cabin window, briefly checked the rear, and then fled the scene.
With the explosion of phone batteries identified as a major factor in intensifying the fire, authorities are now expected to reassess safety protocols for transporting goods in private buses. Police and transport officials have started inspections of parcel offices operated by private travel agencies across the state to ensure hazardous materials like mobile phones aren’t transported without adequate safety measures.
Forensic experts concluded that the simultaneous explosion of over 400 mobile phones turned a serious accident into a deadly inferno, raising urgent concerns about unsafe parcel transport practices in passenger buses.
