The Tamil film industry is heading toward a major standoff over the theater to OTT release window. The Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Film Active Producers Association have decided to halt the release of new Tamil films, along with shooting and post production activities, from September 1. Theater owners and distributors are demanding that films be released on OTT platforms only after completing eight weeks in theaters. They have also said that only films whose producers provide a written assurance on the eight week window will be screened.
Producers have strongly opposed the unilateral decision, stating that similar restrictions are not being imposed in neighbouring states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. They plan to take the issue to the Tamil Nadu government and seek a solution through discussions with all stakeholders. If the deadlock continues, several upcoming releases could face delays, while producers may come under financial pressure. However, theater owners remain hopeful that the issue will be resolved through negotiations before the September releases.
