Bollywood actor Anupam Kher has come out in support of popular Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi following a controversy at an event in Uttarakhand. The incident arose after state minister Subodh Uniyal accused the singer of performing on stage under the influence of alcohol. Responding to the episode, Kher said he had known Mehndi for many years and that, to his knowledge, the singer did not consume alcohol. He also said Mehndi had been dealing with health issues over the past two to three years and suggested that the singer may have attended the event to honour a prior commitment to the organisers.
Kher said he was saddened after watching a video of the incident and maintained that publicly humiliating an artist on stage was inappropriate. He argued that if the minister had concerns about the performance, they could have been communicated privately and respectfully instead. Expressing regret that Mehndi had to face such a situation, Kher also apologised on the minister’s behalf. His remarks have brought renewed attention to the controversy surrounding the singer’s appearance at the Uttarakhand event.
