Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said that some people had confined Telangana’s state bird, the Indian roller, in cages for personal gain during the Dasara festival. Acting on credible information provided by citizens, Hyderabad City Police conducted raids at several locations and rescued four birds alive. Sajjanar shared the details in a post on X. Two birds were rescued near a temple close to Bapughat in Langar Houz, one near the Sri Chitragupta Swamy Temple in Chatrinaka, and another near a temple in Balaji Nagar, Mangalhat.
The rescued birds were handed over to Forest Department officials, Sajjanar said. He condemned the practice of confining and mistreating birds in the name of festival traditions, calling it inhumane. He added that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible in coordination with the Forest Department. Sajjanar urged citizens to report incidents of harm to wildlife by calling the toll-free numbers 1800 425 5364, 9803338666, or 112.
