The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has indicated that it is examining a proposal to introduce polymer currency notes in the country. RBI Governor has stated that the central bank is actively evaluating the feasibility of bringing polymer-based banknotes into circulation as part of efforts to improve the durability, security, and lifespan of Indian currency. The move is expected to help reduce wear and tear while enhancing protection against counterfeiting.
According to reports, the RBI is likely to begin the initiative through a pilot project involving ₹10 and ₹20 denomination notes. If the pilot proves successful, the central bank may consider expanding the use of polymer notes to other denominations in the future. Polymer banknotes are already being used in several countries and are known for their longer life, improved security features, and resistance to damage compared to traditional paper-based currency.
