Known as the "Metro Man of India," E. Sreedharan played a transformative role in modernizing the country's transportation infrastructure. Celebrating his birthday today, Sreedharan remains a symbol of discipline, integrity, and engineering excellence. Born on June 12, 1932, in Kerala's Palakkad district, he graduated in Civil Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada and joined the Indian Railways Engineering Service. He first gained national recognition in 1964 when he successfully restored the damaged Pamban Bridge in just 46 days, well ahead of schedule.
Sreedharan later became the driving force behind several landmark projects, including India’s first underground metro system in Kolkata, the engineering marvel of the Konkan Railway, and the highly successful Delhi Metro. As the first Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, he completed the project ahead of schedule and within budget, setting new benchmarks for public infrastructure. His contributions earned him prestigious honors, including the Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan. Sreedharan’s belief that leaders should inspire through action continues to motivate generations of engineers and professionals.
