Landslides and Floods Wreak Havoc Across Uttarakhand

Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across Uttarakhand, triggering landslides, floods and other rain-related incidents. At least seven people have died so far. More than 172 roads across the state have been blocked due to landslides, leaving ambulances and other vehicles stranded at several locations. The Gaula, Kosi, Bin and Kshipa rivers are also flowing at dangerous levels, raising concerns over further flooding.

Several projects have received heavy inflows of floodwater. Near Kotdwar in Pauri district, a woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old child were swept away and killed while attempting to cross the Kolhu River. In Uday Uda village of Almora district, two women and a child died after landslides hit houses. Two Nepali workers also lost their lives in the Dhar area. Authorities have declared holidays for schools in several areas in view of the continuing heavy rainfall.
