Japanese entrepreneur Shoji Morimoto has turned an unusual concept into a source of income by offering clients something as simple as his presence. Morimoto was reportedly dismissed from his corporate job in 2018 after being viewed as lacking initiative and “not doing anything.” He later transformed that perception into a unique companion rental service, presenting himself as Japan’s “do nothing” guy. His clients hire him when they want quiet company without the pressure of conversation or social interaction.
Morimoto’s services have included standing at marathon finish lines, accompanying clients to different places and simply sitting with them during video calls. The concept is based on providing company without demanding conversation, advice or emotional involvement. Morimoto has explained that the client decides what they want to do and he simply goes along with it, with no expectation of a deep commitment or a particular personality. His unconventional business model has reportedly generated around $80,000 in a year.
