A growing number of families in Telangana are becoming increasingly cautious about the personal habits of prospective grooms as drug abuse among young people continues to rise. In a recent incident in Hyderabad's KPHB Colony, a woman called off her wedding after discovering messages on her fiancé’s phone seeking marijuana. Concerned about his alleged drug use, her family requested a drug test, but the groom refused, leading to the cancellation of the marriage. In another case, a family broke off an engagement after learning that the prospective groom had developed a drug habit. Following the cancellation, the accused allegedly morphed engagement photographs and threatened the woman, prompting the family to approach the She Teams for help.
According to officials, drug addiction is becoming a serious concern among educated youth, including IT professionals and medical students. This month alone, Telangana Narcotics Bureau (EAGLE) officials reportedly caught around 40 young men and women consuming narcotics, including several IT employees and medical students aged between 20 and 26 years. As a result, many parents are now conducting background checks on prospective grooms, including inquiries about their behavior, workplace reputation, and any criminal records. Meanwhile, the EAGLE helpline continues to receive distress calls from families seeking rehabilitation and treatment for children addicted to marijuana, sleeping pills, and synthetic drugs.
