Chennai Fishermen Angry Over New Secretariat!

Fishermen from coastal villages around Pattinapakkam and Srinivasapuram in Chennai have strongly opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to construct a new Assembly-cum-Secretariat complex in the area. They allege that the decision was taken without adequately consulting local residents and fear that the project could affect their traditional livelihood, homes and fishing-related activities. Fishermen’s representatives have warned that protests could be intensified if the government does not reconsider the proposal.

Residents of Mullikuppam, Srinivasapuram, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Bhavani Kuppam, Irudhayapuram, Selvarajapuram, Dooming Kuppam, Nochi Nagar and Nochikuppam have held consultations and demanded that the government withdraw the project proposal. They have said further action would be decided if the government does not respond by September 21. The government has given in-principle approval for the proposed complex on around 25.55 acres, with an estimated project cost of ₹1,200 crore.
