The Supreme Court has given the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) nationwide authority to investigate digital arrest cases, allowing the agency to take up such cases from any part of the country. The court directed all states and Union Territories to extend necessary cooperation during investigations and ensure effective action against cyber fraud networks.
The court also issued guidelines to prevent misuse of digital communication platforms in criminal investigations. It stated that summons should not be issued through WhatsApp and recommended taking action under Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those involved in such offences. The move aims to strengthen measures against rising digital arrest scams.
