Spending Half His Salary on Rent: Kushal Lodha Sparks Debate

Chartered accountant and content creator Kushal Lodha has sparked a discussion about expensive housing after revealing that he once paid ₹50,000 a month in rent while earning ₹1 lakh. Lodha chose to live in Lower Parel, Mumbai, despite the rent consuming half of his monthly income. He said people around him questioned the decision and even called him “mad” for spending such a large portion of his earnings on housing.

Lodha explained that his decision was not simply about living in a better home. He believes the environment around him influenced the way he thought, worked and viewed his ambitions. Living among ambitious people and being surrounded by opportunities made the high rent feel worthwhile to him. He described the expense as an investment in his environment and mindset. While some users agreed that surroundings can influence ambitions and quality of life, others argued that spending half of one’s income on rent may not be practical for people with family responsibilities and other financial commitments.
