Canva has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature called Magic Layers that can transform a flat or static image into a fully editable layered design. With this tool, users can upload a single image and break it into separate elements such as text, shapes, and objects. This allows designers to edit each component individually and easily modify the overall design according to their needs.
The feature is powered by Canva’s in house design model, a proprietary foundation system launched in October 2025. The tool analyzes the entire image, understands how different elements are structured, and separates them into editable layers while preserving the original layout. It can even restore text as live editable boxes, making it easier for users to customize existing designs or AI generated visuals.
Currently, Magic Layers supports single-page PNG and JPG images and is available in public beta in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Canva plans to expand the feature to more countries soon. Since it is part of the platform’s artificial intelligence tools, users will need a subscription to access and use this feature.
